Event organizers for the annual celebration announced the iconic New Year Eve ball drop in New York City’s Times Square will occur virtually this year. As the world continues to struggle with the coronavirus pandemic, there will be the risk of spreading infection as impossible to maintain social distance.
Event organizers for the annual celebration have announced that the ball drop to ring in 2021 will happen “visually, virtually, and safely. The press release by the organizers stated” The event will feature “a virtually enhanced celebration that brings Times Square and the Ball to you digitally no matter where you are,”
The president of the Times Square Alliance Tim Tompkins said that “this year there will be significant new and enhanced virtual, visual and digital offerings to complement whatever limited live entertainment or experiences … will take place in Times Square.”
Further added to the release, “Because more than ever in these divided and fear-filled times, the world desperately needs to come together symbolically and virtually to celebrate the people and things we love and to look forward with a sense of renewal and new beginnings,”
Jeff Straus, the president of Countdown Entertainment said, “We will miss everyone this year but we will bring our celebration to you, whether you want to turn off and turn away from the bad news of 2020 or turn to the new year with a sense of hope, renewal, and resolution, you’ll be able to join us virtually like never before as part of the Times Square 2021 celebration.”
