With the opening of the borders and start of the summer holiday season, Germany may introduce mandatory coronavirus tests for travelers returning from high-risk destinations, according to its health minister Jens Spahn. 

The number of new infections in the country hit a two month high. Currently, Germany recorded 206,332 total cases with the new cases of 818 on July 24th and 372 on July 25th.

The German government wants to do everything possible to halt the spread of the virus while respecting people’s rights, Mr. Spahn told Deutschlandfunk radio. Further, he added “We are also checking whether it is legally possible to oblige someone to do a test because it would be an encroachment on freedom,”

His comments come after the number of new infections in the country hit a two-month high.

On Friday, health ministers and senators from Germany’s 16 states and the federal government agreed on offering the holidaymakers, Covid-19 test on a voluntary basis. The travelers arriving from high-risk countries as the USA, Brazil, Turkey, India have to make the immediate test where as travelers from other countries can test within 3 days of arrival.

Any travelers returning from high risk country is tested positive are not required to have 14 days quarantine.
